Trialling a new compact camera in Hawaii

January 19, 2014

Our 2014 Hawaii trip started this morning with day 1 involving no more than a drive to the North Shore and checking into the accommodation. There was a brief opportunity to test out a new camera in the afternoon with a stroll along Sunset Beach. Prior to leaving home I decided to forgo the underwater camera, housing, strobes, wide angle lens etc etc for a simple point and shoot camera to enable some more enjoyment with snorkelling and diving rather than worrying about balancing strobe light in manual mode underwater. This was a big decision to make as this will be our last Hawaii trip for sometime and I wanted to get the most out of my time underwater.

The compact camera I ended up going for was the Nikon AW110. The selling point for this one was the underwater depth rating of 18 metres. Most of our dives in this area are under this depth, so this camera should be able to do a basic job. I wasn't sure how it would go above water, so I tested it out around sunset this afternoon and was quite impressed with the results (see below). Although it doesn't provide complete control over settings, it does have the basics covered including exposure compensation which enabled the sunset shots to be achieved with ease.

Over the coming weeks I'll share some more images from this camera. Basically everything you see from Hawaii will be shot on this camera with the exception of any wave shots which may or may not occur due to some ridiculous 20 foot beasts we encountered today. That story another time....
